This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to create a registry of African Americans with early rheumatoid arthritis. This is the first early rheumatoid arthritis registry in which a large cohort of African Americans is systematically studied in a longitudinal fashion. The registry will include a total of 500 patients who will be evaluable at 5 years disease duration. To obtain the goal of 500, as many as 600 patients will be enrolled. One of the primary aims of the registry is to isolate and immortalize genomic DNA from patient blood samples for use in future studies. The Pittman GCRC processes, stores, and isolates all genomic DNA obtained through this registry. The GCRC Informatics Core serves as the database repository using Teleform and other data management capabilities to manage the registry data. A total of 9 patients were enrolled in the reporting period, during which exemption status was pending from the OMB.
