Veiled bodies, Naked minds, Resistant souls: Utilising interdisciplinary arts to decolonize the image of Iranian women in post-revolutionary cinema

This practice research PhD will utilise innovative interdisciplinary approaches to interrogate both the reception of the representation of women between 2005 to the present in Iranian cinema, and of Iranian female artists. In dialogue with postcolonial and political theories, particularly the works of Benjamin, Glissant, and Bhabha, Negar will examine the colonial mechanisms behind the construction and policing of these representations within Iran, and their fetishized reception within the West. Building on recent publications examining female filmmakers and the representation of women in Iranian cinema (Derayeh 2010; Eyvazi 2011; Ghorbankarimi 2015; Moradiyan Rizi 2015; Davary 2018; Dönmez-Colin 2020), Negar will work across visual art experimental film and curation to challenge these mechanisms, and to explore agentive, complex images of women onscreen and of Iranian female artists.
