英文摘要
This project aims to show how more inclusive heritage interpretation can, by fostering aspirational hope, empower and inspire the poor to utilize their own agency to move out of the 'poverty trap'. Beyond itspractical benefits, my research also makes an important intellectual contribution to the fields of heritage, and classical studies by challenging current concepts used to assess real-life impacts of heritagepresentation.Studies attest to a sharp rise in poverty in Greece in recent years, a hardship that limits the potentialboth of individuals and the nation. Absence of aspirational hope, affirmed through lack of societalpositive messaging, significantly contributes to these limits. Ways to improve this situation are then, critically important. My project examines how restrictive, elitist historical narratives presented at Greekheritage sites contribute to this lack of hope. I highlight alternate inclusive narratives to increaseaspiration and potential in poorer individuals.
