Investigating the influence of New Thought on Theatrical Mentalism

My doctoral thesis explores the philosophical movements that fostered Theatrical Mentalism and their combined impact ondiscourses of the mind and brain. My project at the Library of Congress will reveal the connection between Mentalism andthe New Thought Movement. Mentalism began in the US in the 19th-century, achieving global influence through performerssuch as Annemann, Dunninger, and Derren Brown, but has received scant academic attention. My research challenges theprevailing view that Mentalism originated in Spiritualism and identifies New Thought as a far more significant influence.Unique materials on performance and belief, held in several of the Library's collections, are essential to pursue the groundbreakingimplications of this connection. The project will create a variety of outputs - thesis chapter, journal articles, a bookchapter, performances - making significant original contributions to Performance History & Philosophy, Health andSpirituality, and Neurocultures.
