Prediction errors (PEs), mismatches between the predicted and actual states of the world, represent the most fundamental units of neural information. It is well established that the brain makes perceptual and cognitive predictions about the likely consequences of both self-generated actions and externally-generated events. This project will employ electrophysiological techniques to investigate whether the brain utilises a general, unitary PE processing system, or whether it makes a fundamental distinction between conceptually different classes of PE. The project will shed light on the nature and significance of PEs, and will test whether PEs truly represent the lingua franca of the brain.
