Synthesis of Small Molecule Probes for Atmospheric Chemistry Studies

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role in climate change, but their exact effect is still poorly understood. The Atmospheric Chemistry Group at UoN studies VOCs to gain a better understanding of their role in the atmosphere (Fig. 2), but many of the compounds they are interested in are not commercially available. In this project, the aim is to synthesise an alkyl iodide based radical precursor to investigate the reactions between isoprene and hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere.
