Formulations play an important role in a variety of significantly important sectors such as pharmaceuticals, home and personal, and agrichemicals, which historically have comprised fossil-derived active ingredients. For a sustainable 21st Century and the UK's commitment for net zero it is imperative that we transition from fossil-derived feedstocks to biobased feedstocks. This research aims:1. To deliver a library of differentiated chemical building blocks derived from carefully selected biomass waste streams using sustainable refining, transformation and purification processes.2. To explore further elaboration of selected bio-derived building blocks into chemical intermediates.The project objectives are:1. To survey and report of known literature on the options for sustainable biomass sources and transformations from which to build libraries of differentiated biorenewable chemical building blocks.2. To select biomass sources, transformations and target chemical building blocks for the initial phase of the experimental project.3. To build libraries of chemical building blocks. Define and implement purification and isolation strategies for experimental quantities of the prioritised targets.4. To define and implement strategies for further elaboration of the prioritised molecules into chemical intermediates.5. To provide holistic sustainability assessments for the biorenewable chemistry libraries using Life Cycle Assessment / Carbon Footprint tools.
