Capturing and Manipulating Representations of Gesture and Expression in Live Music Performance

The area of research is the "live performance" area of music interaction. The subject has a recent but rich history of research, much of which having been presented in such outlets as the NIME Conference (since 2001), the international Computer Music Conference, and the Computer Music Journal.The research question is: can a symbolic language abstract the " things we do" as performers of such systems, and does having a language allow some sophisticated (and possibly innovative or surprising) results?The research project would focus on developing means to interpret collated streams of input data (e.g. audio, accelerometers, actuators), and abstract their meaning in a form of representation that allows analysis and transformation. Whereas musical actions have been abstracted in systems which as musical notation and MIDI, performance gestures effectively have no such equivalent. It could be argued that MPE MIDI Polyphonic Expression is an approach to encode performance gestures but it is instrument-centric rather than performer centric.
