Witnessing as Resistance: Memories and the Performance of Truth in response to Assad's Syria

Through the study of participatory workshops that focus on every-day forms of political violence in regime-held Syria post-2011, this PhD proposes to research the ambiguities that arise as part of testimonial practices as a form of resistance. In focusing on concrete examples, this research aims to further theorise the partial and fallible nature of witnessing in relationship to truth and narrative, and the role played by memory and anticipation in registering, making sense of, and recounting new experiences. This practice-led research aims to activate materials gathered during the workshops by developing a performance which will situate the findings in existing work on collective memory andcommunicate the dynamics of testimonial practices to a wider audience. This research will build upon existing scholarship on witnessing and memory studies, and haunting and subjectivity in relationship to ideology and discourse.
