Organic fluorine chemicals (molecules containing at least one fluorine) have shown to be highly important compounds to the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry. This interest can be attributed to fluorinated groups modifying the metabolic stability, lipophilicity, pKa or conformational preferences compared to non-fluorinated analogues. The C-F bond has a higher bond dissociation energy than any other C-X single bond and so, is challenging to activate. The high C-F bond strength results in them being inert to many reaction conditions, allowing it to be carried through multi-step syntheses and providing interesting regio- and chemoselectivity. There are many classes of C-F bonds, some of which include aryl fluorides, acyl fluorides, vinyl fluorides and alkyl fluorides. Each type of C-F bond provides its own set of challenges to activate and functionalise. In this project we will be focussing on the activation and functionalisation of C(sp3)-F bonds using electrochemistry. The development of mild, metal-free C-F activation is of great interest to synthetic chemistry and electrochemistry can provide unique solutions to these challenges as it allows for environmentally benign, atom economical redox transformations. Reactions can be performed with high selectivity and functional group tolerance by altering the applied potential from the power source. Novel C-F activation will be developed using mild electrochemical conditions.
