The organisation of domestic workers through the Young Christian Workers movement

This research will focus on the relationship between domestic workers and the Young Christian Workers movement (Jeunesse Ouvriè Chrétienne, JOC). Created in Belgium in 1925, JOC aimed to bring the Catholic Church closer to working people. By analysing the role of domestic workers within this movement in Brazil, Colombia (Catholic countries) and England (Catholic minority), this research will contribute to our knowledge of Catholic transnational activism, the transnational history of domestic workers and women's labour history. The project will use JOC archives in Belgium and Brazil and conduct oral history interviews with jocist domestic workers.
