Demystifying the Voice: Vocal Technique and Female Playback Singers in Bollywood

The proposed research analyses the vocal techniques of female playback singers in the Bollywood film industry. Through primarily ethnographic means such as interviews, workshops, and participant observation, it seeks to develop and mobilise a vocabulary for the vocal techniques of these singers, based on their own terminology and articulation of their practice. My research prioritises materialist analyses of the physiology of the voice, rooted in vocal biology and ENT (ear, nose and throat) science, in order to demystify the voice of playback singers in India and prove that their technique and artistry is intentional, cultivated through training and practice.
