'Time Spent Listening': Sound Media, Migration, and Isolation

This project will explore the links between communication through sound media and the experience of isolation in the contexts of migration, long-distance relationships, and loneliness. It will take the form of a hybrid novel combining fiction, memoir, and critical essay, based in part on my own experiences of being both a broadcaster and the child of immigrants. The book tells the story of a mixed-race, second-generation-immigrant radio presenter experiencing personal and professional crisis; it will also incorporate a critical study bringing sound and media theory into dialogue with theories of immigrant experience, including through interviews with migrant and diaspora broadcasters.
