This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. A course for students wishing to acquire a more detailed molecular description of the interaction of radiation with molecular matter and molecular fluorescence. Both quantitative theory and experiments will be presented. The description of the experimental situations and data analysis for obtaining molecular information will be based on a solid theoretical setting that forms the framework for the course. The emphasis of practical applications will be on biophysical experimental situations, using fluorescence and absorption measurements, stressing optical spectroscopic transitions involving molecular electronic and vibrational transitions. Practical spectroscopy examples will demonstrate how to measure and interpret molecular properties from optical spectroscopy experiments. The course should be of interest to students with a broad range of backgrounds. It should be useful for research practitioners of spectroscopic methods, as well as for those who wish to acquire a familiarity in order to understand the past and modern literature. Prerequisites: undergraduate courses in quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, or consent of instructor. The course will contain a laboratory section, which although recommended, is not required (it is an extra hour credit). The laboratory will provide the student with practical considerations of spectroscopy, and will exemplify and extend the lecture material.
