This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Electrospun fibers have diameters between a few hundred nanometers up to 1 micron. For the crystalline polymer PEO we would like to see how polymers are ordered inside the fiber. Scattering from such small objects will require a microfocused beam using x-ray capillaries and a He flightpath between sample and detector. A single quantum 4 detector should offer enough q-space range for the whole diffuse fiber pattern. The experiment fits in with the general microdiffraction developments at MacCHESS. We will need a total of 48 hours, one day for aligning the microfocusing setup, and 1 day for taking data.
