This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Primary aims The main objective of our interventional study is to evaluate the impact of the medication (amitriptyline) on symptoms of patients with abdominal pain of non-organic origin. Secondary aims To examine the interaction between psychosocial traits (e.g., anxiety, depression, pain coping mechanisms, health-related quality of life) and bowel symptoms and measure the impact of therapy on those variables. Long term objectives We hope to expand the project in the future by evaluating this or other medications on physiologic variables such as visceral sensation, motor function and brain imaging and processing.
