CLINICAL EVALUATION OF PORTABLE LACTATE METER IN TYPE GLYCOGEN STORAGE DISEASE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Glycogen storage disease type 1 is associated with hypoglycemia and high blood lactate levels. Presently, patients may use portable finger stick glucose meters to monitor blood sugars, but lacate levels are only determined during clinical visits with laboratory access. High lactate levels have been associated with several long-term complications of the disease, and the ability to monitor these levels in the home would be greatly advantageous to affected individuals. Recently, a portable blood lactate meter, the Lactate-Pro, has become available, but it has not yet been tested for clinical use. We propose testing the accuracy of the Lactate-Pro by comparing finger stick and venous samples run on the meter to the results obtained by the clinical labs. Speciafically, we will be comparing venous samples run in the lab to venous samples run on the meter; finger stick sample readings will also be compared to laboratory samples.
