This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Aims: 1. To determine the efficacy of three new glucose sources that have a lower glycemic index then the currently used cornstarch. Hypothesis - It is expected that the lower glycemic index therapies will maintain a blood sugar level above 70 mg/dL for a greater amount of time than the traditional cornstarch therapy. 2. To determine the metabolic control of each glucose source. Hypothesis ¿ Due to the lower glycemic index of the new glucose sources it is anticipated that they will deliver better metabolic control. 3. To assess the adverse side effect profile of each of the products. Hypothesis - It is projected that the new glucose sources will produce no greater adverse side effects than the traditional Argo cornstarch. Some foods contain sugars that are undigestable by human enzymes and resultantly may be digested by bacteria in the colon which produces gas and may cause discomfort. The three carbohydrate sources being explored are low in undigestable sugars and should cause minimal discomfort.
