INTRANASAL CALCITONIN IN THE TREATMENT OF OSTEOPENIA AND OSTEOPOROSIS IN CHILD

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Specific aim of the study is to compare the effect of treatment with nasally administered calcitonin plus calcium and vitamin D supplementation to that of treatment with placebo plus calcium and vitamin D supplementation on the lumbar bone mineral density of patients with the diagnosis of IBD and low lumbar bone mineral density (lumbar BMD 1 standard deviation or more below that of a healthy subject with the same age and sex). The primary endpoint will be lumbar BMD at 18 months after intiation of the treatment, measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). We have selected lumbar spine BMD as the primary outcome variable because the lumbar spine is representative of trabecular bone. Trabecular bone has the most rapid turnover, and therefore reflects rapid changes in bone mineral mass most accurately and consistantly.
