This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. SEARCH is a national, multi-center, population-based study examining the burden of diabetes in individuals less than 20 year of age and the changes in the frequency and characteristics of the various types of diabetes over time. The study is also developing efficient and practical approaches to identifying the various types of diabetes based on clinical and biochemical data. The study began with a definition of the major types of diabetes based on the cause of each type of diabetes. SEARCH investigators have refined and are testing the practical algorithms developed to identify types of diabetes that can be used by clinicians, public health workers, and researchers. SEARCH is also examining trends over time in the delivery of health care and the complications of diabetes. In September 2005, the SEARCH Study group was awarded funding for an additional 5 years. SEARCH Phase 2 will continue the work initiated in the initial phase of SEARCH while expanding the collection of data to address aims related to complications of diabetes and quality of diabetes care.
