This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of this study is to determine if side effects associated with the use of cholesterol lowering "statins" can be improved with a naturally occurring substance called coenzyme Q-10. Cholesterol lowering is important and may reduce the risk of having or dying from a stroke or heart attack by about 30%. However, statins may cause damage to the liver and muscles,as measured by blood tests. Some patients also complain of muscle aches,swelling,weakness or fatigue without abnormal blood tests. This study hopes to determine if providing coenzyme Q-10,which is blocked by statins,could improve these side effects.
