HPV INFECTION AND HIGH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE DIET: PILOT PROJECT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The specific objectives for this study are: (1) to estimate the portion of women with human papillomavirus (HPV) who will modify their diet to include seven or more servings of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables each day, (2) to estimate serum concentration of carotenoids, cholesterol, tocopherois, retinol, and folate before, during, and after the dietary intervention, and correlate these concentrations with self-reports of diet among women with HPV, (3) to verify the feasibility and validity of the risk assessment questionnaire, (4) to assess the persistence of cervical HPV infection, and (5) to estimate the proportion of screened potential participants that are put on study. To accomplish this aim, 30 women who have HPV will be recruited to adhere to a study diet of > 7 servings of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables per day. Every two months, participants will be tested for HPV infection from the cervix, have a tablespoon of blood drawn and respond to health and behavior questionnaires. Each participant will be followed for a total of 6 months. During the 6 month period, participants will have four in-person counseling sessions with a registered dietician and biweekly phone or email follow-up conversations. Serum for carotenoids, cholesterol, tocopherols, retinol, and folate will be drawn at baseline. The serum for carotenoids and cholesterol will be repeated at months 2, 4, and 6. Dietary intake will be measured using the Fred Hutchinson Food Frequency Questionnaire at baseline and month 6. The primary outcome of interest will be number of every two month visits with HPV present (oncogenic and nonocogenic type).
