This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Observations suggest that children and adolescents with poorly controlled Type 1 diabetes are at risk for decreased bone mass. Most recently, reduced lumbar BMD measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been reported in Type 1 diabetic adolescents. Our research group has observed lower tibia trabecular vBMD (p=.01), lumbar spine and whole body bone mineral content and density (p0.05), and whole body bone mineral content acquisition (p0.02) in both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of adolescents with Type 1 diabetes when compared to a secular reference population. This study addresses the following specific aim: To compare bone metabolism in adolescents girls with Type 1 diabetes mellitus and matched controls (n=6 age and maturation-matched pairs). Data collected from these subjects will be used to strengthen data collected under GCRC Protocol # 0319.
