This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) provides a measurement of true volumetric bone mineral density and bone strength and is able to separate trabecular and cortical bone compartments. Only limited data is available on pQCT measurements in children and young adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop normative pQCT data in pediatric populations for use in clinical studies of: normal bone growth and development, changes in the relationship of muscle to bone strength during growth and development, the assessment of the effect of chronic illness/disease on bone health, and the development of intervention trials to improve bone health in vulnerable populations.
