This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project provides a generic database (GDB) concerning very low birth weight infants. Although the centers contributing to the database serve varying populations and do not represent regional sampling, their populations demonstrate the morbidity problems faced by very low birth weight neonates cared for at a number of major tertiary care academic centers. The database is used to characterize the infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units, to examine the relationships between specific clinical profiles and infant morbidity and mortality, and to measure trends in incidence of various disease entities. The GDB also provides a rich data resource in the formulation of new study hypotheses.
