This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in affected probands and their family members. We believe that the most critical area of research at this point in time is to unravel the role of genetic susceptibility to diabetes and obesity, and its interaction with the changing epidemiology of behavioral risk factors. The primary data collection data will be done in the proband's home and processed in the CORE laboratory through the CRC. Also, the CRC will be used for those instances when a family wants to participate but does not want to have the research staff come to their home (level 1). The CRC will also be used for a more detailed exam with a sub-set of participants who were seen previously in their home or the CRC (level 2).
