PHLEBOTOMY OF NORMAL VOLUNTEERS TO SUPPORT PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM CULTURES

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Human red blood cells are needed by several research laboratories, to sustain in vitro cultures of malaria parasites (Plasmodium falciparum). In order to provide a reliable supply of cells, a pool of about six healthy volunteers is maintained, to be available for blood donation. Every week, up to 250 mL blood is collected from one of the subjects, on a rotating basis. Volunteers undergo safety testing three times annually.
