TRANSCRIPTOME-BASED BIOMARKERS IN HUMAN OSTEOARTHRITIS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The investigators will collect blood, DNA, serum proteins, etc from patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or normals for later evaluation of changes associated with OA or RA. This is part of a larger protocol sponsored by the NIH to collect these samples in hopes that a reasonably specific marker of OA or RA activity can be detected. Blood, DNA, RNA from PBMCs, serum as well as synovial fluid and tissue will be collected and banked and analyzed by microarray technologies or proteomics approaches. At present there are no good markers for progression or activity of OA, and it is generally appreciated that little progress in effective drug therapies can be made in the absence of easy serum or other markers to follow. This is one of five NIH-sponsored studies designed to develop biomarkers for OA disease activity. In addition, because DNA will be available for possible genetic analysis and serum, etc for proteomic analysis, it will be possible to perform other sorts of analysis as well. Approach: The approach is simple and straightforward.
