BEDREST AND AGING: PROJECT 2 EXERCISE AND MUSCLE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We will test the following hypotheses in a group of older men and women (6580 years) who will undergo 10 days of bedrest only, bedrest with therapeutic resistance exercise, or bedrest with standard-of-care walking exercise. Resistance exercise will consist of training the knee extensor and flexor muscles every third day (three sets of eight repetitions at 80% of the one-repetition maximum [1RM]). Standard-of-care walking exercise will consist of 15 minutes of walking every day.
