This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Patients with renal failure have an overabundance of many harmful molecules and proinflammatory cytokines in circulation and are treated by hemodialysis. We have identified three putative proteins that have the potential for stimulating and maintaining an inflammatory state in these patients: HMGB1, free hemoglobin, and S100A8. This study will look at the circulating levels of these three analytes over the course of dialysis treatment. The study will then correlate the concentrations of these analytes in circulation with the patients' feeling of "well-being", as described by a short questionnaire.
