PLANNING INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY: DIABETIC HEART: COMPREHENSION PROPOSAL FOR IRC

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The ultimate goal of the planning process described herein is to develop an Interdisciplinary Research Center (IRC) at Washington University focused on the problem of diabetic cardiovascular disease. The plan described above will begin as an open-ended exploration of the concept of interdisciplinary research and delineation of our strengths and weakness. As the process evolves, we will develop goal-oriented approaches including establishing working planning groups and conducting pilot research. In order to establish an IRC, it will be necessary to define short-and long-range goals and to map out precise interdisciplinary research strategies. It will also be necessary secure long-term funding for this enormous effort. Accordingly, we plan to develop a comprehensive proposal for an IRC during the last six months of the funding period. It is assumed that'''' such a proposal would be consistent with the plans of the NIH to launch the Roadmap initiative into the next decade. The final proposal will represent the culmination of the efforts of the participants of the planning process including preliminary data generated by the pilot projects. The PI of the planning grant will oversee the development and writing of the final proposal. The proposal will be critically reviewed by the Council and External Advisory Panel
