This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Interdisciplinary Planning Pathway groups will develop and conduct two specific Pilot Projects thematically linked to the two Fundamental Discovery Pathways. This exercise will serve as a critical means of linking disciplines and bridging across the Pathways. The projects will be designed to gererate a select number of candidate biomarkers followed by validation of the markers in humans; from bench-to-population studies. Accordingly, this approach will require the extensive input by members of both the Discovery and Translational Studies and Clinical Implementation Pathway planning groups and will rely on support provided by the Technology Platform. Examples of appropriate projects include studies to investigate the role of specific intracellular fatty acid intermediates as mediators of toxicity and markers of disease severity in the diabetic heart from mouse to human. Another example might involve a project to evaluate the role of lipid-activated nuclear receptors in the diabetic vascular imflammatory response from pathobiologic mechanisms to in vivo nanoparticle-based imaging. In essence, the Pilot Projects will serve as a critical mechanism to bring the distinct planning groups together as an interdisciplinary team to address a circumscribed biomedical problem. In addition, the strengths and weakness of the interdisciplinary teams will become apparent during the planning and execution of the projects. The research proposals will be reviewed and approved by the Council. The two general phases of the pilot projects are as followes: Phase I: Generation of biomarker and early validation Phase II: Develop and validate a Diabetic Cardiovascular Biomarker Pane
