This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Hyperbranched fluoropolymers bearing pentafluorophenyl chain end groups undergo nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions with amino-terminated poly(ethylene oxide)s to produce hybrid hyperbranched-linear star polymers of amphiphilic character. These materials are important for their unimolecular micelle character and they also serve as precursors for the generation of minimally-adhesive films, coatings, and membranes that present nanoscopically-resolved surface topographies and morphologies. Mass spectrometry has been applied toward the characterization of the hyperbranched fluoropolymers, linear poly(ethylene oxide)s and it is expected to be quite valuable for the characterization of the star polymers, in particular, by allowing for determination of the number of star arms and the arm distribution. These data are difficult to determine by other means, for example, typical molecular weight analyses, because of the amphiphilic behavior and the globular s hap e.
