The Center will be under the scientific leadership of Dr. Eric Hunter and an Executive Committee consisting of Dr. Michael Saag (Deputy Director) and seven Associate Directors, Drs. Beatrice Hahn (Vaccine Development), Casey Morrow (Basic Science), James Raczynski (Prevention Sciences), George Shaw (Translational Studies), Sten Vermund (Epidemiology), Richard Whitley (Clinical Sciences) and Craig Wilson (Adolescent HIV Medicine). Additional scientific and administrative quality assessments are provided by an External Advisory Committee composed of Drs. Tom Coates, James Curran, Warner Green, Doug Richman, Bruce Walker, and Irv Weissman and an Internal Advisory Committee composed of the Provost, the Deans of Medicine and Public Health, and key Departmental Chairs. The Administrative Core provides the necessary liaison between the CFAR, the UAB/Grants & Contracts administration groups and the relevant school, departmental, and divisional or sectional administrations within UAB. Multidisciplinary activities require an efficient, informed administrative effort to assure smooth working relations, solid interaction, effective use of resources, and fiscal accountability. While the responsibility for scientific program direction and leadership rests with the Director, Deputy Director and the seven Associate Directors, the day-to-day operations of the Center are carried out by an effective, highly skilled Administrative and Fiscal staff that is located in the dedicated administrative offices in the Bevill Biomedical Research Building. As a designated University-wide Center with Departmental status within the University System, the Administrative Core is responsible for management of all non-faculty personnel that are appointed within the Center as well as fiscal management of all accounts administered by the Center. Through the Administrative Core, a web-based shared core facility billing system will be implemented to facilitate the administration of charge-backs to core users and maintain a record of Core utilization. The Administrative Core is responsible for organizing, scheduling and managing Dinner Lecture Series, the Interdisciplinary Research Program round-tables as well as Research Retreats and special Symposia. This core is also the focus of an expanded outreach program aimed at community education, subject recruitment and retention and the implementation of intervention strategies for prevention. Through interactions with minority institutions in Alabama, and the use of existing mechanisms for the support of minority faculty within the institution and NIH, we plan to enhance minodty faculty involvement in the Center.
