This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Rh proteins are integral membrane proteins whose most visible role is as a blood factor that determines the (+/-) phenotype of blood (e.g. O+, O-). Recent functional studies by the Kustu laboratory has shown that Rh proteins are CO2 channels. While the structure of two distant homologs, AmtB and Amt-1, have been determined, these Amt proteins are ammonia and/or methylamine channels. The goals of this project are to determine the structure of the first Rh structure protein and to elucidate the features that lead to their distinct functions.
