This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Basal bodies function to form cilia or flagella in a number of different cells. They are also very similar to centrioles found in centrosomes. Basal bodies or centrioles include a radial array of 9 triplet microtubules with other associated structures. Basal bodies are thought to be composed of upto 200 proteins. Classical procedures to prepare basal bodies from ciliates (which have several hundred per cell) and the completed genome of the Tetrahymena make it possible to determine the proteome of these important organelles.
