This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Consistent with the proposed goal of this project to provide a comprehensive reference
to neuroanatomy and white matter pathology, during the April 2006-April 2007 reporting
period we have completed a quantitative analysis of white matter infiltration by primary
brain tumors. The results of this study were published in Academic Radiology in 2007
(Talos et al., 2007).
For the purpose of developing a new multi-modal brain atlas, to serve as a reference for
normal white matter anatomy, we have recently acquired a new multi-modal, highresolution MRI data set. The acquisition was performed on a 3T Siemens MRI scanner
using a 32-channel head coil and includes a 0.5 mm isotropic MPRAGE and a 1 mm
isotropic, 128 gradients Diffusion Tensor sequence. Currently, work is under way, in
collaboration with the White Matter and fMRI Informatics Cores on two fronts:
+ mapping the label maps of the original digital brain atlas (SPL-PNL) into the new MRI
data set to facilitate segmentation; and
+ loading and processing a new high-resolution DTI data set (128 gradients) using the
3D-Slicer.
