This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. During the past year, the SPL-PNL brain atlas has undergone a major revision. The label maps were entirely revised, appropriate corrections were made, and additional structures were added, such as the thalamic nuclei, hypothalamus, epithalamus, ventral striatum, septal nuclei, substantial nigra, red nucleus, tectal area of mesencephalon, and cerebellar peduncles. A new set of improved 3D-models was created, taking advantage of the new joint-smoothing algorithm available in the 3D-Slicer. All structures have been attributed with proper anatomic names, in accordance with Nomina Anatomica. A new, consistent hierarchical tree wasdeveloped, which served for reorganizing the atlas data set. A set of neuroanatomy teaching files was generated from the new SPL-PNL atlas, including motor systems, visual system, limbic system, diencephalon, brain stem, and left cerebral hemisphere. These teaching files consist of 3D-scenes, which selectively display the relevant structures for the respective topic, and are accompanied by comprehensive text descriptions.
