This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The current data collection Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the NE-CAT beamlines is the Area Detector System Corp. (ADSC) interface. It was chosen for familiarity and expediency. In the late 90's and early 2000's many beamlines equipped with ADSC detectors used this GUI. Similarly, beamlines have used the MARResearch GUI. These interfaces could be seen and are still used at the NSLS, CHESS, and the APS. Though it is still familiar to some users, the necessity for users to use two computers and two programs with the limitation for expansion have limited the growth of these interfaces to new beamlines.
We decided to upgrade the current interface by implementing the Blu-Ice, release 4-2, software package. This system was developed by the structural biology group at SSRL with close interaction with the protein crystallography users. It consists of an intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) that conceals two other lower levels, a Distributed Contol System Server (DCSS) and a Distributed Hardware Server (DHS) level. This architecture provides us with a framework for expanding the capabilities of the beamline.
The program is installed at the NE-CAT bending magnet beamline 8-BM. Commissioning of singlewavelength data collection was demonstrated in October of 2005. Commissioning covered control of all the basic necessities that a user would require to operate the beamline. It is now capable of multiple user access, controlling the ADSC 315 CCD detector, the Galil motor controller and communication to CONSOLE, the current beamline control program. MAD data collection is in commissioning mode.
