Building sustainable and innovative research in Cancer and Cardiovascular disease: Planning the design and development of the South American Center of Research Excellence to Counter NCDs (SACREN)

SUMMARY OF THE PLANNING UNIT COMPONENT  As cancer and CVD are rapidly increasing its disease burden in South America, there is an  urgent need to improve their prevention and control strategies, informed by high quality  research. Unfortunately, the dearth of adequate population‐based data as well as the limited  research infrastructure and funding, challenge NCD research, and particularly cancer research  efforts in the region. Since 2010, CESCAS and CRONICAS have assembled two population‐based  prospective cohorts formerly funded by NIH/NHLBI until 2014‐2015. These cohorts recruited at  baseline ~11000 adults randomly sampled from the general population from four cities in  Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, and three cities in Peru, respectively. The studies were designed  to estimate the prevalence as well as the long term incidence of cardio‐metabolic diseases and  their risk factors in adults without CVD at baseline Leveraged a well‐developed research  infrastructure, the centers of Argentina and Peru aim to expand their research capacity in  cardiovascular epidemiology towards cancer epidemiology, by joining the division of  Population Science of DFCI. We will develop a population‐based cancer and CVD research  program based on our previous work performed by the centers of Argentina and Peru through  their respective prospective cohort studies in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Peru, respectively.  By integrating these two programs we will be able to identify common risk factors and causal  pathways that may influence the development of both CVD and cancer in South America. In  addition, we will perform a join pilot project focused on the geo‐mapping of prevalence,  incidence and mortality using GIS technology, for Gallbladder and Gastric Cancer. Both cancers  have higher incidence in South America, compared to the rest of the world. SACREN will also  develop research enhancement activities focused on learning specific knowledge and skills,  including hands‐on practice and mentoring, aimed at strengthening the abilities of early‐stage  researchers and research support staff. Finally, we aim to identify the shared core facilities  each partner will contribute to SACREN to support its research projects, such as data  management and analysis, bio banks handling, and communication platforms, exploring  mechanisms to share infrastructure and resources to avoid duplication and redundancies, and  defining explicitly the rules and regulations for its common use.
