PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
This application is in response to the Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) identified as NOT-CA-23-041. Prostate
cancer information shared through popular social networks such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok is widely
viewed but misinformation is common. The impact of social networks on patient-physician communications about
prostate cancer is unknown. We will address this research gap using three main approaches: (1) compare the
quality of information, understandability, and actionability between social media posts about prostate cancer in
English and Spanish by healthcare providers versus other publisher types; (2) explore the use of social media
platforms for direct patient-physician communications about prostate cancer; and (3) explore the perspectives of
healthcare providers serving diverse communities on the positive and/or negative impacts of social media for
patient-physician communications. Results of this study will be used to create a tip sheet for health care providers
on best practices for patient-facing social media communication, and will be moved forward in later years of the
project to discuss with Black and Hispanic patients the impact of social media for their communications with
healthcare providers and clinical decision-making. Our multi-disciplinary team is well-suited to conduct this study
with expertise in prostate cancer, biostatistics, qualitative research, health literacy, and social media. The
expected outcomes of this study will advance the field by studying ways that social media can be leveraged to
improve patient-physician communications.
