This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In this protocol we propose to continue testing samples of infants born to diabetic mothers (IDMs) and healthy full-term control infants. The hypothesis under investigation is that iron deficiency with or without fetal hypoxia can selectively damage the structures in the medial temporal lobe that mediate explicit memory; thus, we predict that IDMs may be at risk for developing impairments in memory. We continue to focus on evaluating auditory and visual recognition memory in subjects from newborn through 5 years of age, using electrophysiological (event-related potentials) tools and behavioral assessments.
