英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a poorly understood disorder that affects approximately 6-10% of women of reproductive age. PCOS is characterized by chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenism, and is a leading cause of female infertility in the United States. Most women with PCOS are also characterized by insulin resistance, which plays a key role in the pathogenesis of PCOS and also places affected women at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The long-term goal of this study is to elucidate the relationship between insulin resistance and PCOS. Dr. John Nestler is considered an expert in this area of research. This grant is a very clear continuation of his previous cutting edge work with PCOS women. Women will be recruited between the ages of 17 to 40.
