CARDIOPULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING IN PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will help determine if CPET and other parameter(s) can help doctors make critical clinical decisions in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. From our large PAH referral clinic, we will perform CPET in 72 human subjects with PAH, as defined by the World Health Organization. We will examine how the pulmonary fasculopathy of PAH affects exercise aerobic capacity and ventilatory efficiency, and how these important reflections of cardiac and pulmonary fascular function relate to clinical indices used in the conventional quantitative measures of disease severity and response to therapy. Therefore important therapeutic decisions can be based on objective measures of the circulatory and ventilatory responses to exercise. This proposal will enable the PI to participate in a structured, graded career development program leading to the acquisition of skills needed for a career in patient-oriented cardiovascular research.
