英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The Boston University Alzheimer's Disease Center (BU ADC) has for many years been involved in multiple clinical research studies looking at aging and age-related memory disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. The participants in these studies are motivated by a desire to help decrease the incidence and morbidity of dementia. The vast majority of participants are willing to donate blood, including DNA samples, towards this cause. At the same time, many researchers are looking for markers of disease risk in blood components (e.g., DNA, serum/plasma).
The Boston University Aging and Alzheimer's Disease BioSample Repository was conceived as a way of bringing together the interests of researchers and participants in a manner that would be optimally beneficial to both groups. A repository at BU would allow participants to contribute to a greater number of studies in a research area in which they have a declared intention to contribute. Researchers would then have a pool of available biological components to access. Furthermore, future research efforts at the BU ADC will have an established protocol and storage for biological samples, creating an incentive to pursue more creative research in the area of aging and memory disorders. These goals are consistent with the requirements of the NIA-funded Alzheimer's Disease Center at Boston University and with stated sharing policies and preferences of NIA and NIH.
