VIROLOGIC AND IMMUNOLOGIC EFFECTS OF ADDING ABACAVIR TO HIV PATIENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The primary objectives of this study are as follows: 1) (Virologic) to determine if the addition of abacavir decreases viral replication in subjects with viral suppression achieved with indinavir and efavirenz; 2) (Virologic) to estimate the decay rate of free virus after the addition of abacavir; 3) (Immunologic) to characterize HIV immune responses in a cohort of patients with sustained viral suppression for 4 years; 4) (Immunologic) to determine if increased and/or amplified HIV immune responses are observed when antiretroviral therapy is augmented with abacavir.
