This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major public health challenge affecting millions of people in the U.S. Up to 30% of knee OA can be attributed to obesity, which exacerbates symptoms, is associated with bilateral problems and accelerates progression of the disease. There have been few published clinical trials on the efficacy of weight loss of the severity and progression of knee OA. The purpose of this protocol is to evaluate the efficacy of weight loss plus lifestyle physical activity on knee OA. The Exercise Core Lab was utilized for this protocol.
