This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this project is to determine in the laboratory, if and how hyaluronan-derived materials interact with white blood cells in human blood, particularly if the material induces inflammatory characteristics among these cells. Hyaluronan is a chemical present in skin tissue. Hyaluronan can be isolated and altered in the laboratory to provide a material, which may be useful for medical devices such as vascular grafts used in treating cardiovascular disease. The goal of this research is to perform laboratory studies to determine how white blood cells (leukocytes) react with hyalruonan and other vascular cell types that are in contact with hyaluronan-based materials.
