This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this study is to explore these two potential mechanisms for the known association between depression and increased morbidity and mortality in Heart Failure (HF). The specfic aim for this study is to determine whether both Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) arousal and nonadherence contribute to the association between depression and poorer HF outcomes. This aim will be tested in a prospective correlational study in which the mediating effects of both DND arousal and nonadherence on the association between depression and the HF patient outcomes will be tested. A total of 300 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of chronic HF from an ischemic etiology with impaired left ventricular systolic function will be followed. Results of this study will provided vital information about the mechanisms linking depression and poor outcomes that clinicians and researchers can use in the design of effective interventions.
