TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES IN ADOLESCENTS AND YOUTH (TODAY)

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The incidence of type 2 diabetes in children is increasing at an alarming rate in the US, especially among minority populations. It is suggested that this increase reflects the increased prevalence of childhood obesity in the US today. Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) is a 5-year, multi-center clinical trial. The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center is one of the twelve treatment centers across the county for this NIDDK/NIH funded project. The trial will compare the effects of medications and intensive lifestyle interventions in 750 children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes. TODAY will define the standard of care for children with this chronic disease, nationally and internationally. Beginning in 2003, approximately 120 Oklahoma children ages 10 years to 17 years will have an opportunity to participate. Native American, African Americans and Hispanic populations are at greater risk of developing this disease, and special emphasis will be given to enrolling children in these ethnic groups. Participants must have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes of less than 2 years of duration. Study medications, supplies, reimbursement of costs, and incentives will be provided during the course of the trial.
